With
the emergence of the Novel Coronavirus, India has been under a complete
lockdown since 24th March, 2020. The citizens have faced the brunt and their
share of anxiety during this period. While some are positive, others are fearful. As the news
channels cover the socio-political and legal aspects of the Pandemic, we can
notice the unfolding of a new lifestyle pattern worldwide.
Recently,
the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had issued an Order (Dated 30th May, 2020) which provided guidelines for a Phased
Reopening (Unlock1) that took effect from the 8th of June, 2020. The
order also provided for an extension of lockdown in the containment zones upto
the 30th of June, 2020. These guidelines are to be implemented by
the state governments accordingly and with respect to the situation in their
states.
Now, as we have
entered the “Unlock” phase, were we really abiding by the previous lockdowns in
the first place? Very few can answer affirmatively. There have been various
reports of people openly flouting the lockdown rules considering themselves as
“super immune” human beings, as a result the cases kept rising and rising to a
level we don’t even know if Corona is living with us or are we living with Corona
(Sarcasm intended). The State of Maharashtra
and the National Capital New Delhi are experiencing an enormous jump in cases which has led to non-availability of beds and ventilators. A very deplorable
situation indeed. However on another note, I spoke to a friend recently and he seemed very excited as the lockdown was now going to open up and he insisted on meeting me soon after. To be honest, I was not keen on meeting him as the cases within my state are very high nor did I encourage him to travel all the way. But he kept insisting and encouraged me to give up on my fears. He stated that “how long are people going to stay at home, after all Coronavirus is just like any other flu.” Okay, I get it, according to him I should kick my fears, leave my house and do away with my cowardice. However, given the appalling situation, I guess being a coward is equal to being a wise person right now. My advice to my dear friend (and to the people of similar mindset) will be to stay at home and don’t wander for no reason. Don’t get too excited and venture into the “lion’s den”. Period!
Now, for those people who have to go to work or have to purchase essentials, I know it gets really nerve wreaking but please follow the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and also the guidelines provided by the MHA strictly with full caution. Make sure you cover your face, wash your hands or use a sanitizer, maintain social distance of at least six feet, avoid gatherings, maintain basic hygiene etc. Can I BE more specific? I guess that is enough information for a prudent man to process.
I know staying at home all day can be really boring. We are missing the open skies, fresh air and the cool breeze. But, at this point of time, one has to be careful about breathing in the fresh air. Make sure it has no Coronavirus in it (just saying). Nevertheless, work from home as much as possible and stay indoors to keep yourself and your family safe. After all, this unlock is to kick-start the economy and not force stop your life! Stay home, stay safe.
